Kalkan Town / Antalya Region

Kalkan is a beautiful quaint town, whitewashed houses decked with red, orange, and white bougainvilleas, narrow cobbled winding streets that lead you down to the renowned marina where you can watch the fishermen return with the days catch from one of the many waterfront cafes.

Kalkan has a good number of high quality restaurants, mostly roof -top. The views over the bay at night is breathtaking. You will also find friendly and vibrant bars which play a wide range of music for all taste. In terms of nightlife Kalkan is much more laid back than the party hot-spot of Fethiye.

From Kalkan you will be able to book different tours that could fill your whole holiday if you wanted, the archaeological sites in and around the area are numerous. The unspoilt interior gives you a chance to truly escape your fellow travellers if you wish. I once visited in April, swam in the morning, drove up into the mountains in the afternoon where the children had a snow ball fight, it was 25 degrees!

You will find various excursions operating from Kalkan, visiting many historical sites, towns and mountain villages, you can hire a boat for the day and visit different coves (try the mud pack in one of the coves, works wonders for the skin I am told) lunch is prepared on deck, along with afternoon tea!

Visit the sunken city at Kekova where you can still see the remains of a Roman harbour, or explore the spectacular Sakilkent Gorge the longest and deepest in Turkey.

Fethiye offers the largest market in the area and has an excellent gold center.

A Jeep safari is a brilliant day out, visit Meis a Greek Island off Kas ( the next town along the coast ).

Canoeing, horse riding, fishing all available.............or just relax by the pool!

What to purchase in Kalkan

Kalkan offers a good range of shops, ranging from boutiques, hand made cotton clothing via the local tailors, supermarkets, hand made ceramics, tour agencies, carpet and kilim shops and a local fresh fish and vegetable market.

On a Thursday it is market day in Kalkan where you can buy cheese, fresh eggs, all locally produced foods, fruit, clothing, spices, Turkish tea, Turkish delight, even a goats bell. It's well worth visiting, it starts at dawn and finishes at dusk!

Apart from fish this local fisherman was selling try Memik's Antique Shop as it is a delight to visit, lanterns, silver plates, coffee pots and jewellery adorn his Aladdin's Cave.

Cotton shirts, Pasminas, linen and throws. Silver and gold you can even choose your own stones from Just Silver and they will make your jewellery to your design.

Colourful Turkish Kilims, cushions, and wall tapestries are always a favourite.

To get from Patara Prince resort to Kalkan you can either order a taxi from the main hotel reception, in a few minutes you will be dropped off in Kalkan or you can go by water taxi (picture below) these small boats run every 10 mins or so direct from the waterfront to Kalkan marina. There is a small charge but worth doing at least once. You can walk to Kalkan and will take around 10 minutes.
